Job Summary

 

Ensure the safety, potency and purity of all products collected, by making certain that all areas of responsibility are operating in full compliance with federal, state, other regulatory and accrediting agencies, departmental and organizational policy.  In accordance with the organization's Standards of Excellence and WE CARE principles, manage all blood collection activities and staff, including Assistant Managers, at specific blood collection sites. Promote internal & external customer service excellence. Work cooperatively with other departments to achieve the organization's overall goals and support the image of the organization within the community. Ensure the confidentiality of all work related information concerning a donor or patient, the organization, other employees and volunteers.

Responsibilities

 

  • Consistently ensures all quality and safety standards are met.
  • Accept personal responsibility for maintaining required professional licensure and CPR certification.
  • Assume lead role and embrace, facilitate and implement new initiatives, strategies, ideas and practices, including but not limited to: Research and Development, wellness programs, and other organizational business opportunities.
  • Actively canvas direct reports on ideas which may promote the development and well-being of the organization, and seek opportunities to leverage resources in alignment with strategic goals.
  • Seek opportunities and work cooperatively with other departments to actively support and achieve departmental and organizational goals.
  • Collaborate with the Director(s), other Managers, Assistant Managers, and NCW Administrative staff to achieve a cooperative and cohesive departmental working environment.
  • Assist in the development of annual budget, provide monthly review oversight, and maintain fiscally responsible budget control.
  • Oversee daily NCW and other activities of the assigned fixed site/mobiles and use Daily Collection Plan, run reports and analyze data. Utilize other tools and support and align assigned Assistant Manager (if applicable), Team Leader and staff, to meet strategic goals. This will be achieved by on-site and mobiles visit.
  • Assess, plan, implement and evaluate day to day activities of all assigned areas of responsibility, to assure that quality services are provided and customer satisfaction is achieved. Participate in providing those services directly, as needed, and maintain competency in areas trained.
  • Regularly report to assigned Director(s) NCW, with recommendations on major problems, anticipated or encountered, suggested improvements, and on achievements in matters related to NCW or otherwise.
  • Direct and manage employees on a day to day basis and support by interpreting and supporting changes, and explaining policies and procedures, answering questions and making constructive suggestions.
  • Mentor, coach, develop and empower all staff. Act as role model and resource and assist others in problem solving.
  • Appropriately delegate tasks to qualified individuals.
  • Be proactive in the resolution of complaints and work related problems involving staff members and donors, responding to issues promptly, with timely follow-up.
  • Conduct regular staff meetings, email all reporting staff and NCW Administration detailed meeting minutes.
  • Monitor staff completion of required reading and training, taking appropriate action as necessary.
  • Participate in donor recruitment, automated conversion, and donor rescheduling, with a focus on customer service to support and build a satisfied and loyal donor base.
  • Focus, educate and promote staff participation in optimum product collection, maximizing use of automated technology, donor conversion and research/special projects.
  • Support the image of the organization within the community.
  • Ability to assume the function and responsibilities of the Team Leader or Registered Nurse when necessary.
  • Responsibility for own means of transportation, allowing for ready & timely travel to any other site or location at short notice.
  • Oversee QC, PM and general maintenance of collection equipment at the assigned fixed site/mobiles.
  • Actively investigate, evaluate and validate new equipment, supplies, techniques and procedures in the donor processing areas.
  • Manage and ensure all site records are available, organized and appropriately filed for record keeping purposes and inspections.
  • Partner with the Human Resources Department on issues regarding, but not limited to:
  • Support and compliance of organizational affirmative action policy.
  • Support of organizational Safety Plan.
  • Interviewing, hiring and disciplinary process.
  • Perform objective annual performance appraisals for assigned staff, with documentation of ongoing progress, through regular one-on-one staff meetings as needed, to promote staff recognition and meet organizational directive.
  • Perform ongoing review and timely approval of time cards, with attention to accuracy and completeness.
  • Partner with the Marketing Department on issues regarding, but not limited to:
  • Donor recognition, retention, marketing programs and policy.
  • Collaborate with Account Marketing Managers on site/mobile goals and strategies, to ensure these are met.
  • Partner with the Logistics Department on issues regarding, but not limited to:
  • Maintenance of NCW facilities and equipment.
  • Remote temperature monitoring, blood refrigerators, platelet incubators, etc.
  • General vehicle maintenance, Mobile Staging, Class B requirements.
  • General property management.
  • Supplies and deliveries.
  • Coordination and resolution of issues with outside vendors.
  • Component pick-ups.
  • Partner with other departments on relevant issues as required.
  • Understands and adheres to the policies, procedures and standards developed as part of the San Diego Blood Bank Compliance Program.
  • Encourages and stimulates a culture throughout San Diego Blood Bank, of ethical sensitivity and compliant behavior.
  • Perform and assist other related duties as assigned or directed

Working Environment

 

  • Standard industry environment (fixed site and bloodmobile).
  • Frequent exposure to the risk of blood borne pathogens.
  • Possible exposure to chemicals that may be hazardous.
  • Standard blood banking environment.
  • Contact with donors, patients and general public under a variety of circumstances.
  • May perform emergency care and handle crisis situations.
  • Travel to other blood collection sites, as needed or assigned, often at short notice.
  • Subject to varying and unpredictable hours.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to work on a computer 4 8 hours a day.
  • At times, may be subject to prolonged standing or sitting.
  • Light to medium lifting required, up to 45 lbs., seeking assistance, using provided equipment, such as cart, lift gate, etc., when necessary / indicated.
  • Assist with lifting and moving of donors.
  • Perform body motions in the ergonomically correct manner such as bending, kneeling, crouching or stooping, twisting, stretching / reaching or climbing, lifting, pushing and pulling, grasping and gripping, keyboard data input.
  • Able to climb steps on bloodmobile self-contained vehicles.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces.
  • Use of equipment that requires a high degree of dexterity.

Equipment Used

  • Standard industry and office equipment.
  • Various motor vehicles and accessories (general and specialized).

Qualifications

Education:

  • Graduate of an approved Registered Nursing Program.

Experience:

  • Minimum 2 years of supervisor or team leader experience desirable.
  • Previous blood bank experience preferred.

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Current Unencumbered California Registered Nursing License.
  • Current level "C" CPR Certification.
  • Valid CA Driver's License.
  • Protecting Human Research Subject Certification (obtained within 6 months of hire)
